Intiland 2013 Calendar

Happy New Year everyone! I’m excited to share a great commission I received late last year. I was asked to create 13 illustrations (12 months, 1 cover) for the Indonesian real estate firm, Intiland’s, 2013 calendar. Each illustration had to feature an Intiland property and have a lifestyle concept based on the property. It was challenging, and I actually did the job twice in 2 slightly varying styles (I’ll post some of those illustrations at another time), but in the end, the client was very happy and I’m really proud to have been asked to create this body of work for them. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Premier Sotheby’s International Realty

I recently received my printed copy of the Premier Sotheby’s Privileged Access brochure. I was commissioned to illustrate the brochure late last year, and while it took a long time to get to production, I think the final piece looks great. The team at Strada were great to work with and I love what they did with the design and layout.

BP Team USA Commercial

Happy 4th of July! In the spirit of the day, I’d like to share a job I worked on for BP’s (Beyond Petroleum) Team USA campaign. Late last year I was called to do work on some storyboards for a film production house out in Brooklyn. When you do this type of job,  you never really know if what you draw will see the light of day. So you can imagine how thrilling it was to see my drawings come to life on TV this past week. The commercials for the BP Team USA campaign have begun airing as the 2012 London Olympics approach. I’ve spent some time today watching the videos and profiles of the athletes, and their compelling stories made me a proud supporter of their goals. I wish them and Team USA all the best this summer.

Here are a few drawings and their corresponding live action shots:

Varoom Magazine Reportage Drawings | Greg Betza

I was pleased to be asked to contribute my reportage drawings to VAROOM! magazine. The publisher Derek was looking to feature illustrators that reportage live music and he was a fan of the drawings I made of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks last year. Here is a post about that show.

VAROOM! is a great illustration based magazine so check out their website and support the cause!

My cover has been accepted by American Illustration! Thanks to the judges and everyone at AI-AP for the recognition!
I’m very excited to share my latest book cover, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It is a classic and one of my favorites, so it was really a dream job to receive the commission from Random House. I love creating lino-cut prints and I thought it was a perfect way to handle this.
Check out this and more in my book jacket portfolio on the new Studio 1482 website.

I’m pleased to announce my inclusion in the Quarry Books release “The Art of Urban Sketching“. It’s a great book filled with many incredible artists, including fellow Studio 1482 members Veronica Lawlor and Margaret Hurst. The book is based on art created for the international sketching blog Urban Sketchers.

I’d like to say a special thank you to author/artist, and Urban Sketchers founder, Gabi Campanario for all of his hard work in putting this book together.

I hope you’ll pick it up at your local book store or online at quarrybooks.com

New work for the Utne Reader | Greg Betza

New work for the Utne Reader

Had a chance to work with a favorite art director of mine, Stephanie Glaros. The article was one of the more interesting I have read in quite a while as it dealt with the author’s trip to the middle east 40 years ago. It was eye opening to hear his perspective on the mid-east then and now.

New work for Benefits Canada

Benefits Canada, the magazine of The Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute  handed me an intriguing article to illustrate last month. The article was detailing the difficult road that employees and employers must travel when a cancer diagnosis reaches their office. I challenged myself to come up with an alternative interpretation of the article as I did not want to treat the subject in a literal way as I didn’t feel like it was appropriate (or interesting) for the subject matter. I’m really pleased with how it came out. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Antenna Magazine History of the Bra | Greg Betza

Antenna Magazine

Last month I was commissioned by Antenna to do a series of illustrations on the history of the Bra. Yes, the Bra. It was great, a really quirky and unusual assignment, but unfortunately things happened and only 2 of the illustrations were ultimately commissioned…and then only one of them actually ran. So the article, titled “What a Bust” turned out to be accurate in more than one way. No, really, I enjoyed the job very much, I just wish more of the art made it out of the sketch phase.

The hippie and the 50s housewife.

Investment Advisor | Greg Betza

Investment Advisor $$$$

I was contacted last month by Investment Advisor magazine to produce a full page illustration for an article on the gift and estate taxes. To put it mildly, this was not an article loaded with visuals, which is exactly why I loved this assignment. It forced me to look for a different way of illustrating the message. Thankfully the AD was open to the idea and really welcomed a conceptual and abstract approach.

It felt great to play around.

Gulfshore Business

It’s been a while since I worked for Gulfshore Business, but last month I was asked to create 2 illustrations for an article about tourism. The first dealing with ‘culinary tourism’ and the second, ‘medical tourism’. Basically, Florida tourism is being driven by food and healthcare! You can read the article here.

Robb Report Illustrations

My latest series of illustrations are for the Robb Report Private Aviation Sourcebook. I had a lot of fun reading about luxury airlines and the extravagant perks that are offered to their clients. I was asked to illustrate a gourmet meal (at a beautiful, private table!), a suite for your dogs, and an on board marriage proposal. Wow.

Breaks in the Armor

I’m pleased to announce that Merge Records will be using my reportage drawings of Crooked Fingers as the artwork for the upcoming album “Breaks In The Armor”. This is an honor for me as I’ve been a fan of both Merge and Eric Bachmann (Crooked Fingers) for years and have always respected their music immensely. In fact, I basically grew up on their music. For me this is an incredibly fulfilling commission and I just can’t wait to hear the album. Check out the trailer for the album HERE.

Thanks to Eric and Maggie.

Microsoft PowerPoint Design Gallery | Greg Betza

Microsoft PowerPoint Design Gallery

Those of you familiar with PowerPoint are well aware of its history of artistic limitations. So when I was asked last month to create original designs for a PowerPoint presentation, I was thrilled to hear that Microsoft is working to change people’s perception of what PowerPoint can be. I was one of six artists to participate and I think everyone did a fantastic job bringing a fresh look to such an important application. Check out the design gallery here and download the presentations for free!

Below is the chosen title slide as well as 2 additional designs that I created for presentation. I’d love to hear which is your favorite.
