Studio 1482 Drawing Event

Studio 1482 was proud to host our inaugural zoom drawing night on October 30th, as a way to say thank you to our clients and stay connected during these trying times.

Drawing from the model is close to our hearts, and we had a great time that evening working with our long-time collaborator, the performance artist Kika. She modeled for us in an dizzying array of stripes; closing out the 3 hour session by wearing a traditional Spanish mantilla.

Below are some drawings created that evening by our Studio members, with a few words about what drawing means to them:

GREG BETZA: Drawing is my way to confidently communicate, artistically. It allows me to share what I see, feel and think freely without hesitation.

MARGARET HURST: Drawing is the visual communication of my feelings and thoughts.

VERONICA LAWLOR: Drawing is my way to connect with others, tell a story, and hopefully bring a little beauty to the world. It’s an instinctive response to a moment, almost like breathing.

DOMINICK SANTISE: Drawing is my constant. No matter what comes next, it starts with a drawing.

Live the InterContinental Life Animations

For the past few months I’ve been teasing this project on my Instagram and I’m so pleased to finally share it. I was commissioned by Smith Creative Labs to illustrate 3 short animations for the InterContinental Hotel Group’s Live the InterContinental Life campaign.

The animations were based on podcast interviews which told stories of empathy, worldliness and fascination and were recorded in London, Beijing, and New York City. Smith and animator Mark Bellncula were incredible partners to work with, granting me a tremendous amount of creative freedom and support. I couldn’t be any happier with how the animations turned out.

I loved that these pieces were created in a mostly traditional way, using sequential hand made drawings and paintings. Some of the longer panoramic drawings were so long that I had to work on my floor…and my floor became my desk! Whatever works.

I did my best to document the process of creating the animation art which I’ve included below. I appreciate you taking the time to look!

Bloomingdales live paint portraits | Greg Betza

Bloomingdales

I was commissioned by Bloomingdales to ‘live-paint’ portraits of their customers. It was so nice to see their clients’ faces when they saw their likenesses appearing on paper. I don’t often talk about art with people who are not artists and it amazed me how impressed and fascinated they are by the process of creating art. Their observations and opinions are diverse and genuine. I learned a lot.

I went into the day thinking mostly about the job that I had to do and how I would execute it. I came away with so much more…meeting new people, of all ages, and hearing their thoughts on what I was doing and how much they enjoyed the process.

Thank you to Bloomingdales for asking me to live-paint portraits of your patrons. Great day!

illustrate a jungle scene for the LA swimsuit designer Palmela G | Despina Georgiadis

Coincidental Illustration

Last year I was commissioned to illustrate a jungle scene for the LA swimsuit designer Palmela G. It was, and still is, being used as the splash page on the company’s website, and looks like this:

Since sketches rarely see the light of day after the job is done, I thought I’d let mine out and share with everyone.

First, I made some line sketches. Followed by the color versions. Sometimes I like to manipulate the sketches in the computer for the thumbnailing/sketching phase. I like the happy accidents that happen, and welcome the change of pace.

I think I like them better than the final. Ssh… Sometimes that happens. ;)

But the craziest thing about this job is what happened a week before I got the call for an illustration of “a jungle scene that HAD TO include vines, a monkey, a bird, a snow leopard and tropical flora”. I was at the Museum of Natural History with my son. We sat in the Rainforest room that’s right next to the room with the whale. So, RAINFOREST and JUNGLE are basically the same thing, right? Anyway, we sat in there for a long time. And we drew, and I made the following drawing:

Crazy right?????

Antenna Magazine History of the Bra | Greg Betza

Antenna Magazine

Last month I was commissioned by Antenna to do a series of illustrations on the history of the Bra. Yes, the Bra. It was great, a really quirky and unusual assignment, but unfortunately things happened and only 2 of the illustrations were ultimately commissioned…and then only one of them actually ran. So the article, titled “What a Bust” turned out to be accurate in more than one way. No, really, I enjoyed the job very much, I just wish more of the art made it out of the sketch phase.

Diana Broussard Illustrations

Diana Broussard 2
I recently came across an old client’s new website, Diana Broussard, and I was proud to see some of my illustrations displayed. Diana is a wonderful lady and a great shoe designer. Back in (I believe 2000), Diana was looking for an illustrator to help her with a promotion to launch her new brand. The promotion was a deck of ‘playing cards’, each with one of Diana’s shoes on it, illustrated my way. The samples below, and on her site, are 2 of the designs from the deck. It was one of the most unusual, and pleasurable jobs I’ve worked on.
