Since the story on Central Park came out in Go Do It #3 – the Urban Poetry issue – several people have asked about the reportage job I completed for the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York’s Columbus Circle. Specifically, how did the hotel use my drawings of the park? Above is one of the coasters for the hotel’s “Mo Bar”, designed by Javier Leguizamo of the Louey Rubino Design Group, who did the interior design. He used my drawings for the bar menu, the room service menu, various print materials throughout the hotel. Below is another coaster…
The hotel doesn’t print these coasters anymore…one of the bartenders told me that people were taking them home, and not putting their drinks on them, to the detriment of the cherry wood bar. I definitely take that as a compliment, and wonder where those coasters are now…? The same goes for the menu, which was printed in a beautiful sepia tone and used quotes about the park to set off the drawings. One of the pages appears below:
So, that’s the story. It was a dream job, as I wrote in the article, and Javier was a pleasure to work with.
